Final Part II

1. The first thing I like about my new found media literacy is that I notice the impact that media has. I always knew it influenced people but now I understand the movement it caused. I realized it is more than a source of entertainment, it is used as an outlet, in a positive and negative way. I never realized how many people really use media in a negative way. I understand that people get so wrapped up in the power that it holds that they might go a little crazy. I realized that media is definitely around us all the time no matter what and if used correctly, it can be a very positive outlet.

 2. The second thing I like is that I feel I have more knowledge of computers and the Adobe programs. Before this class I never thought I could make a ball move from one end of a page to another. This knowledge will hopefully expand because the job market is always in need of people who are able to work well with computers. Using these programs made this class better than others because we were able to use our creativity more and it was fun!

 3. One of the final things I enjoyed about media literacy is that I am not more perceptive to advertising and the messages they are trying to get across. I think my new found ability to spot the transparent messages that Ads are trying to put into our heads will allow me avoid buying into it. So maybe next time I won’t buy something because everyone else has one (Ipod, cell phone, different clothing brands..oops). I’m sure I will still give in a little but I think I’ll always look at ads differently, knowing very well who they are trying to connect with and who will probably buy that product. I think advertising will never fail and it is a cool concept to be able to shape people’s perspectives.

Blog #6: As I spend basically my entire day in the library I found myself wondering if there was anything new on Facebook. It’s funny how much facebook becomes a part of a college student’s, and now a high school student’s, life. I am more than willing to admit that I have given in to the well constructed form of distraction. Why not look at a Facebook friend’s pictures, even though you barely talk to them in person? All these new applications are even worse for my studies. However I believe Facebook is a good way to socialize and connect with your peers. People can easily access each other for group projects and other school related activities. I think Facebook is a genius idea and as long as some crazy Cheerleaders don’t use it as an excuse then I think it will continue to be a place of networking among peers.

Blog #5: This is street art created by Julian Beever. I used one of his images for my final but I wanted to show more. I think this image as well as others of his are clear examples of manipulation and illusion. This was the best example for me because it really is hard to tell what is real and what is drawn. Are you looking at a drawing in a frame that was dug up? or is the hole part of the drawing? Like Beever’s works of art, media has a way of manipulating and adding different elements to create new perspectives and ideas. Can you tell which is fake and which is real?http://hubpages.com/hub/Incredible_Beever

Blog #4

I was sitting in my room excited for the new episode of LOST thats on tonight and was thinking about why I was so excited for a fictional TV show. I realized that theres no deep meaning behind people loving a TV show, its just purely enjoyable. Why not escape for an hour and try to figure out meanings to a show thats already pre-determinded? Also, why not watch those reality shows with people who are willing to embarass themselves for 15 minutes of fame? I occassionally watch some of these reality shows because sometimes I can’t believe that people would go through those ridiculous things just to get on TV. I thought of it when we spoke about SecondLife. It serves as an escape for some people to do or think about something thats not really part of your real life.

The first ad is a perfect example of how advertisements are trying to push a certain image. “We have a hot new look…you can too.” This ad for the pill that will make you have the new hot pill, is attempting to make you believe that you will have the body of the guy in the ad. The use of the word Xtreme is also trying to make you believe that its better than the other fat burners/muscle builders being advertised. The fire in the background is also trying to emphasize the “hot” image.

The next two ads are promoting confidence and a younger look. The target can be for both older and younger women. There is a “older” woman on the first ad which will attract possibly the middle aged women looking to feel better and look younger. The second ad promotes younger skin and it also has a younger woman on it to attract younger woman looking for clear skin. “Goodbye dryness and blackheads” will influence girls to believe that they can be the girl on the ad and that blackheads and dryness are so horrible and should be rid of forever. I’m sure no one really wants dryness or poor skin but advertisements have added to the negative reaction to acne or poor skin.

Blog #3

In response to the incident in Florida with the teenage girls beating another girl, I think it is a little extreme to blame the media. Although I agree that things like MySpace could be dangerous for immature teenagers like these girls in the video. However, I think that these girls are completely responsible for the acts they committed. Some articles stated that the victim said bad things about the girls on her MySpace. I believe that if the girl wanted “gossip” badly enough she could have found another outlet if MySpace wasn’t present. If not sites like these on the internet, then it would be through some other outlet. No matter the time, there will always be something to blame other than the actual people who committed a wrongful act. We can blame video games, bad languaged music, movies, tv, and the internet for anything in society today. I understand that the parents of these kids don’t want to believe that their child is capable of something like this, but, its time to face reality.

Glamour

Glamour is described as “the state of being envied.” Glamour is seen in advertising as an image appearing happy, without flaws and satisfied. This is a useful tool in advertising because in almost every ad you see, the person representing the product is seen as extremely happy. The ad makes the consumers believe that their happiness is a direct result from the product.

In the movie “How to Get Ahead in Advertising” the main character directly makes fun of the glamour idea. Attempting to think of a pitch for boil cream, the main character for a moment takes on a character of a perky, happy woman. He knows that consumers are attractive to perfect, bubbly characters. He creates a woman who woman envy and look up to as well as a woman that men are physically attracted to. While doing this, the main character knows perfectly well that this boil cream doesn’t work and it won’t make you beautiful.
